Your Path to Becoming a Certified Energy Advisor in Canada

To become an NRCan-certified Energy Advisor (EA), candidates must complete a mandatory probationary file process under the supervision of an approved Service Organization (SO). This hands-on training ensures you gain the practical experience required to conduct professional energy assessments while meeting all EnerGuide Rating System (ERS) Version 15.13 standards.

Observed Assessments

👀 Shadow an Expert | Learn Best Practices

  • Observe 2+ full energy assessments conducted by a certified Specialist and instructor.

  • Gain insight into:

    • On-site data collection

    • Blower door testing

    • Client communication

    • Site notes

Note: Assessments can be performed on real homes (using the supervisor’s EA number) or "friendly" practice properties.

Solo Assessments

🏠 Conduct Independent Evaluations | Apply Your Knowledge

  • Complete 2+ unsupervised assessments (must be "friendly" homes—no official labels issued).

  • Includes:
    ✅ At least 1 D-file (existing homes) OR 1 P-file (new builds)

  • Submit files to your SO’s Quality Assurance Specialist (QAS) for Level 3 Audit.

  • Receive feedback and correct errors until files meet NRCan standards.

Key Focus Areas:
✔ Accurate data collection
✔ Proper documentation (photos, forms, waivers)
✔ HOT2000 modeling compliance

Supervised Assessments

🎓 Final Evaluation | Prove Your Readiness

  • Perform 2+ assessments under direct supervision of your licensed supervisor.

  • Files may be submitted to NRCan’s database under your supervisor’s EA number.

  • Demonstrate mastery of:

    • ERS Technical Procedures

    • Blower door testing (including multi-zone for MURBs*)

    • Client reporting

Upon Success:

We will submit your Energy Advisor Registration to NRCan through our certified SO and make you certified
